This class will focus on the beginnings of Shinto, the native religion of Japan, its basic tenets, the introduction of Buddhism into Japan, a compare and contrast analysis of the two, and the use and relevance of each to the Japanese, both culturally and socially, over the centuries. This is a seminar and discussion, where your input, experience, and questions are welcome! The instructor, Roger Pratt, lived and worked in Japan for 19 years, graduated from Sophia Univ. in Tokyo, and has a master’s in East Asia Studies from FSU.
