Description
In 269 AD, eighteen-year-old Anthony entered a church. This entrance symbolically signifies the beginning of Christian monasticism. Lecture/discussion will address the inward journey; hermit vs community monks; Saint Benedict of Nursia whose Rule spread through Latin Christendom; the Cluniac Monks; the interweaving of manual labor, rest, and prayer with holy offices such as vigils, lauds, prime, tierce, sext, none, vespers and compline. How did monasteries accrue so much wealth/revenue that Henry VIII broke with the Church—calling for the dissolution of monasteries so as to control its riches?
