Height + Light = God. The taller and brighter the edifice–the closer to the Primum Mobile (prime mover). This simple belief resulted in the Cathedrals. Lecture/discussion will address the architecture of Western Europe from 1050 to 1400—from Romanesque to Early, High, Late, and German Gothic—medieval building types, styles and methods such as barrel/ tunnel/groin/ ribbed vaulting; arch and pier system; post-and-lintel; tympanum; the flying buttress of Notre Dame and medieval images, iconography, stained glass, and pilgrimages.
