From erupting volcanoes to devastating earthquakes, landslides, and tsunamis, the drama of geology has long inspired Hollywood films and television. There are more than 200 movies, documentaries, and TV episodes with the word ‘volcano” in the title, with the earliest movie dating to 1913. Because Hollywood is about the making of movies, however, scientific accuracy is often a casualty of the dramatic story line and special effects. This course explores how Earth processes are portrayed on screen, comparing cinematic drama with real-world science. We will examine how geology is portrayed in popular film and television, identify what they get right, and uncover where filmmakers take creative liberties.
