Description
The Anglo-Saxon period, just before the Norman Conquest, was replete with writings because to be “learned” at this time meant you were adept at copying. You did not innovate – you absorbed and reproduced the wisdom of earlier authorities-even, or especially, documents (Plato, Aristotle, Caesar) preserved by the Arabs who controlled the Mediterranean. Discussion will address hagiographies (lives of saints); fasting and feasting, masons and monasteries and history and heresy—a cornucopia of medieval tidbits.
